YOUR FIRST INVERT: How to Nail a Heelside Backroll

First of all, contrary to popular belief  you don't need much of a cut at all to land the heelside back roll. Your "pop" comes from edging AWAY from the boat. It is a very natural rotation. This is why I suggest the heelside back roll as one of your first inverts you should learn. To onlookers, a properly executed heelside back roll will actually look like a "cartwheel".
1. Be sure to be coming in to the wake on your heelside edge. Take a progressive cut into the wake starting your approach about 10-15 feet from the wake. When I say progressive I mean- think of your cut like a pendulum, the pendulum starts off with little very little speed gradually building speed/power, but by the time it reaches the bottom it is at full speed. Same with your cut- start off easy, gradually edging harder as you reach the wake. Your hardest edge and most power should come right at the top of the wake... be sure to STAY ON EDGE... don't wuss out. This is critical. In your approach to the wake, try to have the board perpindicular to the wake.

2. As you reach the top of the wake EDGE AWAY from the boat. As you are edging away from the boat, I find it easier if you put your chin to your front shoulder and look to the sky. REMEMBER... AWAY FROM THE BOAT. Do NOT edge away and do a front flip. Rotate AROUND THE ROPE, NOT OVER THE ROPE.
3. Be sure you are hanging on to the handle with BOTH HANDS throughout this entire trick and try to keep your elbows locked into your body. This was my biggest problem when I learned the hs back roll. I would come off the wake edging away from the boat, but I would let go with my front hand. You will tend to want to do this, it is natural for your front hand to want to lead the rotation. Believe me, you do not need to throw this trick or try to actually do a flip... TRUST ME. The momentum of the boat going forward and your body and board going the opposite direction (AWAY) will give you the rotation you need to complete the heelside back roll. HANG ON...

4. Halfway through the rotation you will feel a strong tug from the boat. This tug is your body coming back around the same direction the boat is traveling... FORWARD. When you feel this tug- keep hanging on!

5. If you are still hanging on to the rope at this point it is time for you to spot your landing... so make sure your EYES ARE OPEN throughout the entire trick. This is also a key to this trick, or any. KEEP 'EM OPEN. There is no way to spot a landing if your eyes are closed. If you have done everything properly you should be landing smoothly on the transition of the opposite wake (on your heelside edge).
*If you are coming up short on this trick (don't make it across both wakes), make your progressive edge into the wake a little harder. If your distance is fine, but you're not getting the full rotation, this means you need to EDGE AWAY FROM THE BOAT MORE.
Edge approach to the wake=DISTANCE Edge away from the boat=ROTATION
Good luck all. After you have it mastered... take one off the double up, or land it to revert, while you're at it...throw a nose grab in there.
