Drive & Hit the Double Up- with Shawn Keeler |
|
One of the most important
elements in hitting the double-up, lies in the hands of the boat driver.
The driver can make or break a great double-up. So make sure that your
driver is comfortable driving the double or expect to have a lot of
patience. By changing the angle the driver goes thru the rollers for the
double-up, which determines if you get height, distance, or both!! Speed
is also a huge factor when driving, drivers make sure the speed is
constant thru the double-up. |
|
| 1. Now that your
driver is comfortable and hitting the double-up perfect, it is now up to
you as the rider to capitalize on stickin it. Once the boat
straightens out, take a normal cut outside the wake and that will position
you to hit the double-up. |
|
| 2. Now comes the tricky part, because this is where timing comes into play. What I like to do is watch the rollers as they come in contact with the bow of the boat. When the roller that I want to hit makes contact with the bow I start heading back in towards the wake. It's similar to a surfer out in the break, zeroing in on the wave they want and timing when they should start paddling. | ![]() |
| 3. Now if your just
learning the whole double-up thing, I suggest coming in easy and hitting
the first roller. Concentrate more on
hitting the roller as it meets with the wake, rather than going huge at
first. There will be three rollers coming towards you with about three to
four feet between them. When your timing is on and your hitting the first
one every time, now you can attempt to go for the bigger ones. Usually
(depending on the boat) the second roller is the money. |
|
| 4. Ounce you hit the
roller, as the wake and the roller converge, it feels like a sling shot.
It brings whole new meaning to going big. The main thing to remember is do
your tricks off the double-up slow!!!! If your getting upside down, slow
your rotation down so you don't over rotate. |
|
| 5. Hopefully, at
this point you are at ten to fifteen feet above the earth. Whatever you do
don't panic. Especially if there is women in the boat, you don't want them
to think your a wimp. Finish your rotation or invert, and get ready to
bend those knees and absorb the shock. Once your down make sure if you
just landed a new move for the first time, you claim it as you're riding
away. You don't want somebody else in the boat to claim your glory first.
Get that finger in the air and let them know who is the man (or woman). HAVE FUN, RIDE SAFE, GO BIG. -Shawn |
